Reviews: First Look at aLinux 12.5 |
| Mad Penguin has reviewed - and was left unimpressed with - the latest release of aLinux: "While I suppose this distribution has some potential, I'm sorry to say that I can't recommend it at this point in time. It appears that there was a ton of effort placed on making it look good but not enough effort placed on other things like performance and functionality. Am I saying it's a wasted effort? Certainly not. I think they've got the right idea. It's just not executed very well in my opinion. Eye candy is fine with some form of moderation. Loading a system with as many bells, whistles, and shiny round things that you can make for a pretty interface, but it can become an annoyance very quickly if you're intending on doing any actual work on the desktop." Distribution Release: aLinux 12.2 |
| aLinux is a new name of what was until recently known as Peanut Linux. Version 12.2 is the first release under the new name: "Changes in aLinux 12.2 are mainly xitami rebuilt, mimes added to that, and mplayer-plug, 'apt' updated to name change. RPM updated to now show a vendor, this can be over ridden in /usr/lib/rpm/macros; as well as email address. Updated RPMs popt from 1.8.1 - 1.9.1 I believe. Some other stuff updated, can't remember it all... oh yeah, kdenetwork, updated to support wireless networking... umm... think brain think... lol... Distribution Review: Peanut 9.1 |
| Linuxdot.org: "There are many things to like about Peanut Linux. Default file manager to use for almost everything is Midnight Commander (MC), similar to the Norton Commander of long ago DOS days. Another bonus is that Peanut Linux is RPM-based, should you prefer RPMs to installing software with tarballs." At one point or another gamers can hit the wall when using other OS systems such as Linux and Mac, as Windows has always been renowned as the OS of choice for the gaming community. In a lot of cases this has changed somewhat over the last few years with the use of virtualization software that helps to bridge that gap, and it can be quite successful to a point. Of course, when you virtualize another OS you can lose some of the performance, than say running a game natively, and with slowdowns and bugs comes frustration. We have listed a few resources that we think are worth a mention for different types of gamers, both online multiplayer and single player, see what you think:
- World of Goo. This is a great puzzle game that will keep you busy for hours, there's also a free playable demo version.
- If you're a online poker enthusiast we can recommend you check out the pokerlistings.com Linux poker page, it has a list of poker apps that are compatible with your OS.
- For the MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) crowds you could always take a look at Vendetta online, "thousands of people can play together, at the same time, in a single, persistent universe", sounds great!
