BSD and Linux Distributions for PowerPC

Introduction
As a recent issue of the Mac Format magazine put it, installing Linux on a Mac is a bit like "sticking Roger Cook's head on Kylie Minogue's body". Why would somebody want to replace Mac OS X, an elegant and user-freindly operating system with a messy, ugly, bloated, confusing, inconsistent and hard-to-use Linux? Then again, why not? Perhaps some users prefer software with source code and without restrictive licenses and clever registration mechanisms. Or maybe they simply prefer the beauty and intelligent design of Apple's hardware over the much more common PC. Or perhaps they enjoy the challenge of making Linux work on a Mac and getting the best of both worlds. We don't know the answer; all we know that many people are doing just that - creating a Linux distribution optimised for the ppc and ppc64 chips. And while some of the included hardware will often not work - for example the Airport Extreme wireless networking kit (although some third-party wireless networking solutions do work) or 3D accelerations on the supplied NVIDIA graphics cards (at least until NVIDIA produces a binary Linux driver for the PPC architecture), that doesn't detract many users from running Linux on their Macs. Below is the list of BSD projects and Linux distributions that develop PPC/PPC64 ports of their products.
