NEW • Development Release: NetBSD 6.1 RC1 |

Jeff Rizzo has announced the availability of the first release candidate for NetBSD 6.1: "The first release candidate of NetBSD 6.1 is now available for download. NetBSD 6.1 will be the first feature update for the NetBSD 6 branch. There are many new drivers, some new features, and many bug fixes. Highlights include: bug fixes and feature improvements to NPF, the NetBSD Packet Filter; improvements to several ARM platforms, including Raspberry Pi which now has nearly-complete support; support for dtrace on amd64; MIPS ports switched to gdb 7.3.1, gdb6 removed; additional device support in key drivers including wm(4), uftdi(4), mfi(4), bge(4), aac(4), tlp(4) and others; various port-specific improvements to the amiga, arm, sparc64 and x68k ports." Jeff Rizzo has announced the release of NetBSD 6.1, a new stable version of the highly portable UNIX-like operating system available for a wide range of platforms: "The NetBSD Project is pleased to announce NetBSD 6.1, the first feature update of the NetBSD 6 release branch. It represents a selected subset of fixes deemed important for security or stability reasons, as well as new features and enhancements. Major changes between 6.0 and 6.1: posix_spawn() - fix processes with attributes; resolve races between vget() and vrele() resulting in vget() returning dead vnodes; prevent crash when unsupported fd's are used with kevent; fix a bug where kmem_alloc() could be called from interrupt context; WAPBL - coalesce writes to the journal to speed up wapbl_flush() on raid5 by a factor of 3 to 4...." Jeff Rizzo has announced the availability of the fourth release candidate for NetBSD 6.1. From the release announcement: "The fourth release candidate of NetBSD 6.1 is now available for download. It is expected that this will be the final release candidate, with the official release following very soon. (Please note that while the third release candidate (RC3) was tagged and built, it was never officially released.) NetBSD 6.1 will be the first feature update for the NetBSD 6 branch. There are many new drivers, some new features, and many bug fixes! Fixes since RC2 include: updated the fix for SA-2013-003 (RNG bug may result in weak cryptographic keys); fixes to npfctl(8) parsing and error handling; fix sendto(2) issue with IPv6 UDP datagrams; fixed ACPI issues affecting some AMD systems; change vax MAXPARTITION from 16 to 12, addressing boot issues on some systems...." Jeff Rizzo has announced the availability of the second release candidate for NetBSD 6.1: "The second release candidate of NetBSD 6.1 is now available for download. NetBSD 6.1 will be the first feature update for the NetBSD 6 branch. There are many new drivers, some new features, and many bug fixes. Fixes since RC1 include: various terminfo fixes; fixed a segfault in awk(1); moved boottime50 and its associated sysctl into the compat module; updated tzdata to 2013b, with the latest timezone info; fixed a crash when the security.curtain sysctl is enabled; fixed some IPF locking issues; fix a crash on statically-linked programs for NetBSD/alpha. It represents a selected subset of fixes deemed important for security or stability reasons. Please note that all fixes in security and bug-fix updates (i.e., NetBSD 6.0.1, 6.0.2, etc.) are cumulative, so the latest update contains all such fixes from the corresponding minor release (in this case, 6.0). Major changes: posix_spawn() - fix processes with attributes; resolve races between vget() and vrele() resulting in vget() returning dead vnodes...." Jeff Rizzo has announced the release of NetBSD 5.2, an updated version of the project's legacy branch: "The NetBSD Project is pleased to announce that version 5.2 of the NetBSD operating system is now available. NetBSD 5.2 is the second feature update of the NetBSD 5.0 release branch. It represents a selected subset of fixes deemed critical for security or stability reasons, as well as new features and enhancements. Users running NetBSD 5.0.3 or earlier are encouraged to upgrade to either NetBSD 5.2 or NetBSD 6.0, depending upon their specific requirements. Please note that all fixes in security/critical updates (i.e. NetBSD 5.0.2, 5.1.2, etc.) are cumulative, so the latest update contains all such fixes since the corresponding minor release. These fixes will also appear in future minor releases (i.e. NetBSD 5.3, etc.), together with other less-critical fixes and feature enhancements." Jeff Rizzo has announced the availability of the first release candidate for NetBSD 5.2, the project's legacy branch. "The first release candidate of NetBSD 5.2 is now available. NetBSD 5.2 is intended for those who have an application using NetBSD 5.0.x or 5.1.x who don't want the churn of upgrading to NetBSD 6.0, but would like bug fixes and some stable new features. There have been a number of changes since 5.1. Those of you who prefer to build from source can continue to follow the netbsd-5 branch, but the netbsd-5-2-RC1 tag is available as well. Please help us test this and any upcoming release candidates as much as possible. Remember, any feedback is good feedback. We'd love to hear from you, whether you've got a complaint or a compliment." NetBSD 6.0, a major new update of the free and highly portable UNIX-like operating system available for a large number of platforms and processor architectures, has been released: "The NetBSD project is pleased to announce NetBSD 6.0, the fourteenth major release of the NetBSD operating system. Changes from the previous release include scalability improvements on multi-core systems, many new and updated device drivers, Xen and MIPS port improvements, and brand new features such as a new packet filter. Some NetBSD 6.0 highlights are: support for thread-local storage (TLS), Logical Volume Manager (LVM) functionality, rewritten disk quota subsystem, new subsystems to handle Flash devices and NAND controllers...." Jeff Rizzo has announced the availability of the second release candidate for NetBSD 6.0: "On behalf of NetBSD's developers, I'm happy to announce the availability of the second release candidate of NetBSD 6.0. Adding a little more polish before the 6.0 release, RC2 fixes these additional issues: the vax port shared library issue is resolved, and vax is once again bootable; ntpd(8) broadcast transmission is fixed; i486 support is fixed in the i386 port; interrupt issues on some PowerPC machines are fixed; X.Org display on a Xen amd64 DOM0 is now working again; a pmap_growkernel() issue which causes some systems to reset very early in the boot process is fixed; CVE-2012-4244 was addressed by updating BIND to 9.9.1-P3...."
