Distribution Release: Slax 7.0.6 |
Tomáš Matějíček has announced the release of Slax 7.0.6, an updated version of the Slackware-based live CD with a minimalist KDE desktop: "I'd like to announce an update of Slax live Linux, version 7.0.6. The main changes are the new Linux kernel 3.8.2 and updated KDE 4.10.1. It was a bit harder than I expected, mostly due to some really odd changes made by KDE developers, which I had to work around to get the same functionality as we are used to. Raw changelog: fixed missing notification when module is activated or deactivated; upgraded all packages to reflect changes in Slackware 'Current'; Updated Firefox to 19.0.2; show date on taskbar under current time; the device notifier in KDE is now hidden since it was showing on mad positions. The Slax size has increased by about 3 MB due to new stuff provided by KDE." Read the full release announcement for more information. Download: slax-English-US-7.0.6-x86_64.iso (226MB, MD5). Update: a bug-fix version 7.0.7 is now available. And 7.0.8. |

Distribution Release: Slax 7.0.4 |
Tomáš Matějíček has announced the release of Slax 7.0.4, the latest update of the project's Slackware-based live CD with KDE: "A new version of the Slax pocket operating system has been released. Improvements and fixes include: added 'load=' and 'noload=' boot parameter support to filter loaded modules; better bootinst.sh compatibility with Ubuntu and its clones; PXE now tries to get Slax data over TFTP (from the same server) if HTTP connection to port 7529 fails; fixed a bug which appeared when using from=... to load Slax from a path which included a directory with two letters; fixed URL open in KDE, so clicking a link in Pidgin for example opens it in Firefox instead of downloading the URL by KDE kioslave; support for special files in Slax bundles; the autobuild system now adds a file /run/requires to all modules which require other modules...." Distribution Release: Slax 7.0.3 |
Tomáš Matějíček has announced the release of Slax 7.0.3, an updated release of the project's Slackware-based live CD: "A new version of Slax is available for download. This release adds several new features and fixes a few bugs as well. Probably the most interesting feature is PXE boot support and improved X auto-detection. All modern computers nowadays support PXE, which allows booting an operating system over network interface independently of data storage devices (like hard disks). Slax fully supports PXE booting now. How to do that? One computer will act as a server, so just boot Slax on it from CD or USB and make sure to have the appropriate boot menu option 'Act as PXE server' checked. Slax on the server computer will provide DHCP, TFTP and HTTP services to enable PXE booting for other computers on the network." See the full release announcement for a list of new features and changes. Download (MD5): slax-English-US-7.0.3-x86_64.iso (219MB). |

Distribution Release: Slax 7.0 |
Tomáš Matějíček has announced the final release of Slax 7.0, a Slackware-based live CD with KDE 4.9.4 that fits onto a 220 MB CD: "I'm happy to announce the final release of Slax version 7.0, code name 'Green Horn'. After more than three years of silence Slax is back in action and is better than ever before. Slax 7.0 is the major update of the Slax Linux live operating system. It includes the newest Linux kernel, KDE 4 desktop, GCC compiler and lots of other stuff in a 210 MB download. Furthermore it's available in more than 50 localizations, so you can get a Slax that speaks your language. Big thanks to everybody who helped with development and testing. The work didn't end now, actually it rather just started. I'm going to prepare a modules section for the website and bring Software Center in Slax to life. The next step, however, is to start supporting buildscripts." Here is the brief release announcement with a screenshot. Tomáš Matějíček has announced the availability of the third release candidate for Slax 7.0, a Slackware-based minimalist live CD with KDE: "You can download Slax 7.0-rc3. The interesting changes include: Slax is now translated to more than 50 languages; added 'slax' use like 'slax activate'; avoid unwanted error warnings about missing devices; bootinst script fixes and improvements; added some firmware including Radeon and some WiFi drivers; support from=/path/slax.iso boot parameter to load Slax data from the given ISO image; Firefox style improvements, Slax software center; added module tools, such as sb2dir, deb2sb, txz2sb; added development module; total Slax size is now around 210 MB (for the 32-bit edition); new wallpaper, hooray! I expect that the final version will not have any more changes and this RC3 will become final on Monday, 10th of December 2012." See the full release announcement for more details and a screenshot. Development Release: Slax 7.0 RC2 |
Tomáš Matějíček has announced the availability of the second release candidate for Slax 7.0, a minimalist Slackware-based live CD with KDE 4: "I've been mostly fixing and improving the RC 1 build of Slax. The boot installer script has been fixed and updated. One of the most common problems nowadays is the strange behavior of some auto-mounting programs, such as udisks, which mounts FAT file system with the 'showexec' parameter. Due to that, only files with Windows extensions (BAT, COM, EXE) are treated as executable. To make it simpler, I wrote a bootinst.bat script so it executes in both Linux and Windows. This should make things easier. I've added ModemManager and related dependencies, including broadband provider info data, so it should be now easier to connect to the Internet using a modem. The KDE desktop was updated to 4.9.3." The release announcement. Download (MD5): slax-7.0-kde4-2012-11-14-i486.iso (183MB), slax-7.0-kde4-2012-11-14-x86_64.iso (189MB). |

Development Release: Slax 7.0 RC1 |
Tomáš Matějíček has announced the availability of the first release candidate for Slax 7.0, a brand-new version of the project's minimalist Slackware-based live CD with KDE 4: "I'm releasing the newest Slax 7 build as a release candidate 1. It has KDE 4 with many applications from the KDE network, KDE multimedia, KDE games, Pidgin IM, Firefox, MPlayer and more. The entire system fits to 183 MB for the 32-bit and 188 MB for the 64-bit variant and runs perfectly fine on boxes with 256 MB of RAM and more. This is most likely the version which contains all the programs for the final Slax release. Development tools are still missing though. Before I show you the download links, I'd like to remind you about the opportunity to get Slax on a cool USB device when it is released." See the release announcement for more details, screenshot and a video. Download (MD5): slax-7.0-kde4-2012-11-06-i486.iso (183MB), slax-7.0-kde4-2012-11-06-x86_64.iso (188MB). |

Development Release: Slax 7.0 Preview |
Tomáš Matějíček has announced the availability of a public preview release of Slax 7.0, a Slackware-based live CD with KDE 4 in under 180 MB: "So here it is. A small lightweight KDE, recompiled with as few dependencies as possible. I've partially completed my battle with the KDE desktop environment. There is a lot of work waiting in the queue, since there are no applications yet except Konsole; however, it is ready for wider public testing. I am convinced it was worth the effort. Both 32-bit and 64-bit variants are ready for testing. I've configured four workspaces. Try to switch between them using your mouse - simply move your mouse pointer to the very top left of the screen. No clicking needed. You should see the effect." Here is the full release announcement with screenshots. Download (MD5): slax-7.0-kde4-2012-10-20-i486.iso (177MB), slax-7.0-kde4-2012-10-20-x86_64.iso (183MB). |
