Stefano Fratepietro has announced the release of DEFT Linux 7.2, an Ubuntu-based live distribution with a large collection of free and open-source tools for incident response, cyber intelligence and computer forensics tasks: "Today we are happy to announce the latest DEFT Linux release, version 7.2. This is the last 32-bit release but it will have bug-fix support until 2020. Please note that the next release will be for 64-bit systems only. What's new in this release? Virtual appliance based on VMware 5 with USB 3 support; Linux kernel 3.0; Autopsy 3 beta 5 (using WINE, please note that you will need a minimum of 1 GB of RAM); Log2tmeline 0.65; guymager 0.6.12; VMFS support; some minor fixes. Stefano Fratepietro has announced the release of DEFT Linux 7, an Ubuntu-based distribution and live DVD containing a collection of tools for penetration testing and forensic analysis: "The DEFT team is pleased to announce the release of the stable version of DEFT Linux 7, a toolkit able to perform computer, mobile and network forensics, incident response and cyber intelligence. DEFT 7 comprises of a GNU/Linux-based system optimized for computer forensics and cyber intelligence activities, installable or able to run in live mode, and DART (Digital Advanced Response Toolkit), a graphical user interface that handles the execution of incident response. Development Release: DEFT Linux 7 RC1 |

Stefano Fratepietro has announced the availability of the first release candidate for DEFT Linux 7, a specialist Ubuntu-based live DVD for digital forensics and penetration testing: "Finally we were able to realize a very stable DEFT Linux 7 release, solving all problems responsible for postponing the release date for RC1. We performed several tests on different computer platforms: laptops, servers and desktop PCs. Our main focus was on Lenovo, DELL, ASUS, Acer, Apple, IBM laptops, IBM and DELL servers as well as Acer, Lenovo and Dell desktop PCs. We tested everything, both booting as a live CD and installing the distro on the test machine: compatibility tests succeeded with excellent results. From this year DEFT 7 will also add more support to mobile forensics: we added several tools that allow you to analyze files and databases used in new generation smartphones (Android and iPhone). Stefano Fratepietro has announced the release of DEFT Linux 6.1, a customised distribution of the Ubuntu live CD containing some of the best open-source applications dedicated to incident response and computer forensics: "DEFT Linux 6.1 is ready for download. DEFT Linux 6.1 is the last planned release of the DEFT 6 series. From June 2011 we will start working on version 7. It will feature great improvements of both the architectural structure and the included applications. Release notes: start faster by 15% over the previous version; optimization of initrd; RegTime.py and Recovery.py. Fixed problem of large pcap file uploads in Xplico. DEFT 6 is based on Lubuntu with Linux kernel 2.6.35 and with the best free computer forensic tools; it is a new concept of computer forensic live system, ewflib-ready, that uses WINE for running Windows computer forensics tools under Linux. This is a list of changes made to the release candidate version: update FTK Imager from 2.9 to 3; update Digital Forensic Framework from 0.8 to 0.9; added Xmount 0.4.4; added mount_ewf utility; wrong Guymager release, now it's version 0.5.7; fixed ISO image MD5 file check; fixed some grammatical errors." What's new? Update - Sleuth Kit 3.1.1 and Autopsy 2.24; update - Xplico to 0.5.7 (100% support of SIP - RTP codec g711, g729, g722, g723 and g726, SDP and RTCP); update - initrd; Dhash report bug fix (reports were not generated); DEFT Extra bug fix (a few applications do not work if the operator click their icons, added the dd tool for x86_64 machines). Stefano Fratepietro has announced the release of DEFT Linux 5, a Xubuntu-based distribution with a collection of open-source applications dedicated to incident response and computer forensics: "DEFT Linux 5 is based on the new Xubuntu kernel 2.6.31 and DEFT Extra 2.0 (computer forensic GUI) with the best freeware computer forensic tools. It isn't a customized Xubuntu like the previous version, it is a new concept of computer forensic live system that use LXDE as the desktop environment and Thunar as the file manager. Other features: an advanced file and directory search tool; Foremost, Scalpel and PhotoRec carving tools; complete support for most file systems; support for Logical Volume Manager; powerful tools for network forensic, such as Xplico, Wireshark, Kismet, Ettercap and Nmap...."
