NEW • Distribution Release: Bonzai Linux 3.2 |

Bonzai Linux 3.2 has been released: "Due to the great interest in the KDE version of the Bonzai Linux distribution, this is a KDE release again. Version 3.2 includes the current stable version of K Desktop Environment 3.1.4. It also includes all current security patches and proposed updates from debian.org. The cahtech web site has reviewed the recently released Bonzai Linux 3.1: "The key to Bonzai is that it is a nice small initial download with only the Debian installer creating any delays. Debian gives you a good solid and stable core which is expandable with ease. You can make it into anything you want. It might need more effort as you go along, but it is worth cutting down on the crap. That might be harsh and vulgar, but it is true. Most of the packages that are installed today with a 'full' distribution are dire and often are ignored...if you even know what half of them do." The full review.

A new release of Bonzai Linux is out: "After hard and long nights of development, version 3.1 of the Bonzai Linux distribution has been released. Bonzai Linux is optimized to fit on a 180MB mini CD. It is based on the current stable Debian distribution called 'woody', containing a customized version of boot-floppies and an easy to use installer. Bonzai uses Kernel 2.4.20 and includes the light-weight windowmanager XFce4 to make installation on older machines possible. Login.app allows you to log in to your system. Synaptic has been added to make package installation easier. Bonzai Linux should be used as a strong and stable base for your Debian based Desktop PC and can be enhanced with all your favourite Debian packages." Bonzai Linux - Debian on a Diet |

Bonzai Linux is a free slimmed-down version of Debian Woody, designed to fit on a miniature 180MB CD. With subtle improvements such as a newer kernel, a more up-to-date KDE, plus a few other tweaks, Bonzai is in fact an improved version of Debian's netinst CD. This is a minimalist approach, designed to get Debian quickly up and running on your network. Once you have a basic Debian install, you can then grab thousands of packages which are available from Debian mirrors on the Internet. Travel writer and Debian zealot Robert Storey recently grabbed a copy of Bonzai and spent a weekend with it, putting it through its paces (and putting aside other distractions such as eating and sleeping). The morning after, a slightly disheveled Robert shares his impressions.

The highly active Debian-based Bonzai Linux project has released another update, version 2.1: "Because Kernel Version 2.4.21 doesn't seem to be stable enough to be integrated into Bonzai Linux, we had to switch back to Kernel 2.4.20. Version 2.0 of Bonzai Linux has been released: "Immediately after the release of version 1.8, the Debian based mini-distribution Bonzai Linux is now available in version 2.0. The step in the version numbering scheme should indicate that this is a 'stable' Release. Changes have only been made to the kernel version." Bonzai Linux is a modified Debian boot CD with the latest Kernel 2.4 21, KDE 3.1.2, hardware auto-detection, file system setup and simplified software selection during its installation; it can be used as a stand-alone distribution or as an improved Debian install CD.
