The latest edition of linmagau.org features a couple of Gentoo-related articles. The first one, entitled Distro Day (Revisited), attempts a new benchmark test, this time with an optimised Gentoo installation: "My hats off to those who do benchmarks for magazines etc., as the amount of time, people and work to do something like this properly is extraordinary. Oh, and did I mention that Gentoo did shade Mandrake and Debian this time around!" The second article, called Gentoo -Gcc, is about binary code optimisation: "Optimisation of the code produced by gcc is a perennial topic of conversation amongst Gentoo users. Gentoo's flexibility and configurability allows a user to compile his whole operating system with the options and flags he wants without (mostly) having to accept a standard configuration that is forced by a binary distribution format."

Matthew Summers has announced the availability of a testing release of Gentoo Linux 10.0, a special 10-year anniversary Gentoo live DVD: "In honor of Gentoo's 10th birthday, we are producing a new live DVD. We need you to test it on as many x86 and x86_64 machines as you can and post bugs. The x86-x86_64 live DVD will work on x86 or x86_64 processors. If your architecture is x86 boot with the default 'gentoo'. If your architecture is amd64 boot with gentoo64. The AMD64 live DVD is for amd64 only. So give us a hand by testing like crazy and posting bugs and we'll have the greatest live DVD ever." The very brief release announcement contains no technical information, but the live DVD comes with Linux kernel 2.6.30, glibc 2.9 and GCC 4.3.2, and boots into KDE 4.3.1 by default (GNOME 2.24 and Xfce 4.6.1 are also available). Gentoo Linux 2008.0 has been released: "The 2008.0 final release is out! Code-named 'It's got what plants crave,' this release contains numerous new features, including an updated installer, improved hardware support, a complete rework of profiles, and a move to Xfce instead of GNOME on the live CD. Live DVDs are not available for x86 or amd64, although they may become available in the future. The 2008.0 release also includes updated versions of many packages already available in your ebuild tree. Highlights: updated installer - the installer now only performs networkless installations using the packages and ebuild tree on the Live CD; improved hardware support - moving to the 2.6.24 kernel added many new drivers for hardware released since the 2007.0 release; updated packages - Portage 2.1.4.4, a 2.6.24 kernel, Xfce 4.4.2, GCC 4.1.2 and glibc 2.6.1."
