NEW • gnuLinEx 2004 Launched |
| Linux Journal has published a developer overview of gnuLinEx 2004, a highly successful Debian-based Linux distribution now used in public offices and schools throughout the province of Extremadura, Spain: "During the installation, the user can choose between Personal Desktop or Lightweight Desktop profiles. The first one includes GNOME 2.6, while the second option consists of a XFCE4 for low-end computers. In both profiles, special emphasis is placed on the look and feel of the desktop, from the design of subjects and regional icons to the generation of simple tools for updating the operating system. Also the installation of additional applications, such as Squeak, is facilitated." Read the reset of the overview with screenshots.

| About gnuLinEx |
| gnuLinEx is a Linux distribution developed by the Extremadura Regional Government in Spain. gnuLinEx is based on GNU/Debian, a Linux distribution that, thanks to its design, makes it easy to create other distributions that can inherit its advantages and get rid of some of its faults (for example, the difficulty of setup and configuration). By using a modified Debian distribution, the Extremadura Regional Government has benefited from the fact that there is a large amount of varied software for it. As a matter of fact, there are 8710 different software pieces. The stability, speed and security of Debian should also be underlined. When it was created, gnuLinEx was based on the then latest stable Debian distribution: 2.2 or Potato. Nowadays, the version based on the new stable Debian version (3.0 or Woody) is available, along with two revisions or updates. |
