NEW • Distribution Release: Ubuntu Linux 4.10 |
| The first ever stable release of Ubuntu Linux, code name "Warty Warthog", is out: "The warm-hearted Warthogs of the Warty Team are proud to present the very first release of Ubuntu! Ubuntu is a new Linux distribution that brings together the extraordinary breadth of Debian with a fast and easy install, regular releases (every six months), a tight selection of excellent packages installed by default and a commitment to security updates with 18 months of security and technical support for every release. Warty can be installed in a minimalist mode for servers, or in full desktop mode. It works well on laptops and desktops." Read the rest of the release announcement. ISO images for AMD64, i386 and PPC architectures, as well as BitTorrent seeds are available from the Ubuntu download page. A quick link to the i386 ISO image: warty-release-install-i386.iso (523MB). | About Ubuntu |
| Ubuntu is a complete desktop Linux operating system, freely available with both community and professional support. The Ubuntu community is built on the ideas enshrined in the Ubuntu Manifesto: that software should be available free of charge, that software tools should be usable by people in their local language and despite any disabilities, and that people should have the freedom to customise and alter their software in whatever way they see fit. "Ubuntu" is an ancient African word, meaning "humanity to others". The Ubuntu distribution brings the spirit of Ubuntu to the software world. |
